NEWPORT NEWS, VA – [November 26, 2024] – Forty teachers across the communities Langley Federal Credit Union serves will receive a $500 grant to bring innovative projects to their classrooms during the 2024-25 academic year. Historically, thirty grants have been awarded to Hampton Roads educators to help support current or new classroom projects. This year, Langley announced that ten additional teachers from Richmond, Virginia and Raleigh, North Carolina, where the credit union opened two branches in 2023, will also be awarded a $500 grant.
Richmond Public Schools teacher, She’ron Fields, received a grant to support an initiative at Barack Obama Elementary (BOES) that supports the wellbeing of new students from other countries and cultures. “Three years ago, Richmond Public Schools (RPS) noticed an increased number of ESL (English as a Second Langue) students, thus we developed a small group and tagged it the NewComer’s Lunch Bunch, providing a safe, welcoming space to create community within the BOES school community.”Fields added, “Our endeavor was not a part of the school budget, therefore a retired teacher offered to be our benefactor for 3 years which ended earlier this year in May 2024. The expected and attained outcomes is for students to experience a sense of safety by identifying with trusted adults, who seek to provide a place that creates a sense of belonging, community, improved attendance and increased academic and social exposure.”
Through the grants, totaling $20,000, Langley is championing diverse initiatives with a focus on enhancing the classroom experience. Among the selected projects are initiatives related to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, agricultural sustainability and environmental consciousness, robotics activities that inspire STEM learning, reading comprehension and access to dual language books, and sensory spaces to improve emotional health.
Langley established the annual mini grant program in 2006 to assist local elementary, middle and high school teachers.
“Langley understands that access to education is the foundation of success and financial wellbeing, and that teachers are the backbone of the education system,” said Jerome Fowlkes, Langley’s Chief Impact Officer and Vice Board Chair of the Langley for Families Foundation Board. “The teacher mini grant program gives our communities’ educators the resources they need to enhance their classroom experience and provide equitable learning opportunities to help their students succeed.”
