NEWPORT NEWS, VA – [June 16, 2025] –Six college-bound members of Langley Federal Credit Union have been selected to receive the 2025 Jean M. Yokum College Scholarships, named in honor of the credit union’s former president and CEO.
Each spring, Langley Federal Credit Union awards the $5,000 scholarships to support graduating high school seniors as they pursue further education.
Recipients were selected for their academic excellence and strong commitment to community service. The Peninsula Community Foundation manages the program in partnership with a volunteer committee of community leaders who help select the scholarship recipients.
The 2025 scholarship recipients are:
Margaret J. Annett, a graduate of Tabb High School in York County, will attend Virginia Tech to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Pre-Med. A driven student leader and accomplished athlete, Margaret served as Senior Class President and Vice President of the National Honor Society, while also captaining the varsity girl’s basketball team and performing in musical theater. Margaret accumulated extensive volunteer experience through her work with Riverside Medical Center, Youth Volunteer Corps, Peninsula Community Chapel, and Pivot Physical Therapy. Inspired by her own orthopedic surgery and recovery, Margaret aspires to become a trauma orthopedic surgeon and healthcare reform advocate.
Julia Diggs graduated from Kecoughtan High School in Hampton and will attend Virginia Tech. Julia is Founder/President of the CHKD Junior Circle and assists in engaging local high school students to support fundraising initiatives for the children’s hospital. Additionally, Julia is Founder of the Women in STEM Hampton Roads Clubs which promotes STEM opportunities for young women. Julia has a passion for supporting underserved communities and plans to pursue a computer engineering degree with a minor in Public Health.
Karen Hu, a graduate of Grafton High School in York County, will attend Cornell University. Karen is a Violinist with the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra and served as President of her high school’s Robotics team, organizing robotics events for youth in York County. Karen also held leadership roles as President of the Science National Honor Society and Vice President of the Neuroscience Club. Karen plans to pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering in hopes of creating solutions for environmental issues.
Evan Yarborough will attend the University of Virginia or Virginia Tech after graduating from Woodside High School in Newport News. Evan served as President of the Math National Honor Society and Treasurer of the Spanish National Honor Society. In addition to being a student-athlete and team captain in cross country and track and field, Evan volunteered extensively at Genesis Christian Fellowship Church, assisting the Audio-Visual team with streaming services. Evan plans to major in Engineering and Minor in Music, balancing his love for science with the creativity and calm that music brings to his life.
Zaynah Weems, a graduate of Poquoson High School, will attend James Madison University where she plans to double major in Musical Theater and Social Work. A passionate vocalist and performer, Zaynah has earned numerous awards through state and regional competitions. Her commitment to community service includes extensive volunteer work with local animal rescue organizations and the Sister Cities of Newport News. At school, she held several leadership roles in both the performing arts and diversity and inclusion initiatives. Zaynah aspires to use the arts and social work as powerful tools to foster empathy, promote inclusion, and drive meaningful social change.
Charis Winder plans to attend North Carolina AT&T State University after graduating from Phoebus High School in Hampton. Charis is an active volunteer with Branches of the Vine Community Church and a Founding Member & Student Coordinator for Youth of United Resilience (Y.O.U.R.) Space. Charis has also demonstrated excellence in leadership and teamwork as the President of the National Honor Society and as Team Captain for the soccer team. Charis plans to major in Biology/Pre-Med and wants to become a pediatrician or sports physician to provide compassionate, individualized care to underserved communities.
