Langley Impact Stories: A Dream Made Possible

Published: November 02, 2026

More Than a Loan, A Relationship

For more than 20 years, Lehan Crane has trusted Langley Federal Credit Union with some of life's biggest financial decisions. What began with a mortgage refinance in 2003 has grown into a relationship built on personal service, trusted advice, and the confidence that someone will always be there to help him find the right solution.

After retiring from the Coast Guard and settling in Smithfield, Virginia, Lehan wanted a financial institution that offered more than competitive rates. He wanted a place where he could walk through the front door, talk with someone face to face, and know he was more than an account number.

"I had always been looking for a place where I could walk in the door and I could be greeted by somebody and I could do business," Lehan said.

That search led him to Langley.

A Better Experience From the Beginning

Lehan first became a Langley member while refinancing his home. After comparing several financial institutions, Langley stood apart for two reasons.

Competitive rates. Exceptional service.

"I had my refinance done within about five to six days, and I was able to lock in a very competitive rate," Lehan recalled. "The people were just so nice." The process was so smooth that when another financial goal came along years later, Langley was his first call.He wanted to build a backyard pool for his family.

Making a Dream Possible

To finance the project, Lehan worked with Langley to open a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC). Rather than requiring him to borrow the entire amount at once, the line of credit allowed him to access funds as each phase of the project progressed.

"They allowed me to take it out a little at a time," Lehan explained. "I was only required to pay the interest on the part that I had taken out and used, not on my entire line of credit." The flexibility proved even more valuable than expected. After completing the pool, an unexpected expense arose while funds were still available through the HELOC. Instead of scrambling to find another financing solution, Leon already had access to the resources he needed.

"I was able to use money still in that home equity line of credit to cover the other issue that came up."  For Lehan, the HELOC was more than a financing tool. It created peace of mind.

The Difference People Make

While the financing helped Lehan accomplish his goal, it was the people inside the branch who convinced him to stay.

Walking into the Carrollton branch never felt like walking into a bank. It felt familiar. "It was like I was meeting somebody that knew me," Lehan said. "They made it feel like I was talking to somebody that I'd known for a long time."

Those conversations naturally led to opportunities Lehan may never have explored on his own. Team members introduced him to products that matched his financial goals, answered every question he had, and never rushed the conversation. "They would take the time to explain what those programs were like."

That guidance eventually led Lehan to open an 11 Month Certificate, adda rewards credit card, use Online Banking and Bill Pay, and expand his relationship with Langley well beyond his original mortgage and HELOC.

Solutions That Grow With You

Over the years, Lehan has continued adding financial tools as his needs evolved.

From checking and savings accounts to online banking and direct deposit, each product has made managing his finances easier.

"I have now set up certain salaries coming into Langley," he said. "It's nice when I can walk into the bank and if I have a particular question, they're going to take the time to explain it to me."

Whether opening a new account or exploring lending options, Lehan says every experience has shared one thing in common. "They made every process easy."

Looking Ahead

Today, Lehan continues to look to Langley whenever a new financial need arises. A future vehicle purchase is already on his radar, and he plans to explore Langley's financing options when the time comes.

"They seem to be competitive, and they seem to care about me as a customer."

For Lehan, that personal attention is what separates Langley from other financial institutions. "It doesn't matter who you are. They treat everybody the same with professionalism. If you walk in with a problem, you will walk out with a solution."

When asked what makes Langley different, Lehan's answer has little to do with rates or products. "I think more than anything, they are focused on their clients. It doesn't matter what issue you have. They are focused on helping you find solutions and helping you do the best and the most with the money that you have."

For more than two decades, Lehan has found exactly what he was looking for. Not just a financial institution. A trusted relationship that continues to grow with every stage of life.
