Is Your Money Safe at a Credit Union? Here's How Langley Protects You

Published: March 20, 2026

Is Your Money Safe at a Credit Union?

Short answer: yes.

As a federally insured credit union, Langley Federal Credit Union is backed by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), which insures member deposits up to $250,000—the same federal protection you’d find at an FDIC-insured bank. But insurance is just the baseline. At Langley, the commitment to your security goes well beyond it.

Here’s a look at exactly how we protect your money, your cards, and your personal information every day.

Is a Mobile Wallet Safe? (Yes—It’s Actually More Secure Than a Physical Card)

There’s a common misconception that tapping your phone to pay is less secure than swiping a card. The opposite is true.

When you add your Langley debit or credit card to a digital wallet, like Apple Pay or Google Pay, your actual card number is never shared with the merchant. Instead, the wallet uses a unique, transaction-specific token. If that token were ever intercepted, it would be useless to a fraudster.

Langley makes getting started easy: we offer instant digital card issuance, meaning you can add your card to your mobile wallet right away, without waiting for a physical card to arrive in the mail. It’s faster, and from day one, your spending is protected by tokenization and device-level biometric authentication.

How Langley Protects Your Debit and Credit Cards

Every Langley Visa, debit and credit, comes with built-in protections through Langley Visa Benefits, and the coverage is more substantial than most members realize.

Your Consumer Debit Visa includes perks like Porch Piracy Protection (up to $10,000 if a new purchase is stolen within 90 days), Baggage Delay Reimbursement ($100/day for up to three days), and Travel Accident Insurance covering up to $200,000.

Many of our Langley Credit Cards offer additional benefits, like:

  1. Travel Accident Insurance up to $1,000,000 in accidental death and dismemberment coverage — for air, rail, ferry, cruise, and bus travel
  2. Trip Cancellation/Interruption: reimbursement up to $2,000 per trip for non-refundable fares if your trip is cancelled or interrupted
  3. Porch Piracy Protection: same $10,000 per claim coverage for stolen purchases
  4. Travel & Emergency Services: 24/7 multilingual assistance for medical referrals, emergency transportation, legal referrals, and more, anywhere in the world

These aren’t add-ons you pay extra for. They’re included with your card. See the full benefits breakdown by card type.

Beyond Visa’s built-in protections, Langley gives you direct control through the Digital Banking app:

  1. Lock or unlock your card instantly: freeze it in seconds if something looks off, no phone call required
  2. Transaction alerts: real-time notifications every time your card is used
  3. Two-factor authentication (2FA): extra login security so only you can access your account
  4. FICO credit score monitoring: track your score monthly to catch unexpected changes early

Is Sending Money Through Langley Secure?

Yes. Langley gives you two trusted options for fast, secure transfers:

Zelle® is integrated directly into Langley’s Digital Banking, so you can send and receive money with people you know, quickly and securely, without ever leaving the app.

For transfers between Langley members, Member-to-Member payments offer the same speed and convenience with the added comfort of keeping everything within Langley’s secure banking environment.

How Langley Handles Fraud and Disputes

If something does go wrong, Langley has a clear process to make it right:

  1. Suspect fraud? Lock your card immediately in the Digital Banking app, then submit a dispute directly in-app or call our Member Experience Center at 757-827-5328.
  2. Billing issue with a merchant? Submit a non-fraud dispute through Digital Banking with transaction details and any merchant correspondence.
  3. Eligible claims may receive a provisional credit while the investigation is in progress, so you’re not left waiting out of pocket.

Langley will never call you asking for your password, PIN, one-time verification codes, or account number. If you receive that kind of request, even from someone claiming to be Langley, don’t share anything and contact us directly.

Extra Layer: Identity Theft Protection

For members who want deeper peace of mind, Langley has partnered with ID360 to offer discounted identity theft protection. ID360 provides 24/7 credit monitoring, annual identity check-ups, and recovery services in the event your personal information is ever compromised. Learn more about ID360 for Langley members.
